farmtripN.W Territories’ herbal healers can’t even catch a break these days. Ed DeVries an Iqaluit, Nunavut resident, is facing four drug-related charges in relation to his privately-owned medical-marijuana club. His club entitled “The Qikiqtani Compassion Club”, is responsible for treating (distributing marijuana to) 543 members, almost all of which are Iqualuit residents.

DeVries, a 52 year old activist, has been running his compassion club for roughly eight months now. Running a professional operation, DeVries offers a multitude of strains priced reasonably at $15/g and $7/g for seniors, with a 7 gram daily limit. Despite DeVries best effort to abide by regulations, even going as far as refusing patients whom could not back their claims or were caught abusing medication, he was still raided by police on Aug. 15th, a set back that nearly cost him his operation. It took DeVries until fall to re-up and recruit a new crop.

“People in Nunavut who can benefit from marijuana are having their rights violated because the medical community won’t provide the documentation the law requires.” says Alison Crowe, DeVries Lawyer. DeVries court date is set for Feb. 15th. Both police and the Crown refuse to comment on the case while it is before the courts.
