Marc Emery is facing 5 years in a Seatle prison for selling seeds! Marc Emery, founder of Cannabis Culture Magazine and critically acclaimed “prince of pot”, is currently being held in custody at the North Fraser Pretrial Center in Port Coquitlam, BC. Emery is facing 5 years in prison for selling seeds by mail to the United States (an offense not even worthy of a charge in Canada. So much so that Marc has paid well over 600,000 dollars in sales taxes over the last 10 years ).
Despite a signed agreement between the United States Court and Emery in 2008, which allowed Emery to serve his time in Canada, our Conservative Government is now refusing to allow Canadians to return home from the US when imprisoned for drug charges. Marc was taken into custody September 28th ‘09 at the BC supreme court. He’ll be held at North Fraser Pretrial Center until Robert Nicholson, the federal Justice Minister, signs the extradition order, turning Marc over to US custody. Marc will then be sent to a jail in Seattle. A jail in which Canadians are grouped with other immigrants to the United States, including drug cartel members from Central and South America.
Even though Stephen Harper’s committee is trying oppress our natural ways of life as cannabis supporters and users, we at least retain support from the New Democratic Party, whose leader, Jack Layton states:
“Several years ago, when this matter became public, we voiced our opposition the extradition of Mr. Emery. We believed then, as we do now, that it is wrong to extradite our citizens for an offence that would not – and, in this situation, did not – result in him being charged in Canada.”
Since Marc’s capture, supporters of the cannabis culture have been camping outside the holding center, demonstrating their dedication and determination in seeing Marc through this injustice.
Luckily 50,000 dollars later, on November 18th, Emery made bail bond, permitting his freedom in Canada for at least two weeks. However after this two week period Marc will still be sent to Seattle to head on his trial. As members of the Cannabis Culture, it is urgently necessary that we do all that we can to ensure that Marc Emery remains in Canada and serves his time as a first-time non-violent offender. This will be achieved through non-violent organized protests or emails, written letters and fax to the federal Justice Minister. It’s time to sound the horns, pack the pipes and bring the Prince home!
